Unzipping on the fly…files that is.

Hey all, this doesn’t specifically correlate to art or design…but it easily could. Have ever found yourself in the need to unzip a file, yet you just didn’t have an unzipping resource at your fingertips? I recently found myself unwillingly using a computer other than my own and was faced with this dilemma. Everything turned out fine of course and I told myself I would add this experience to a blog entry. Well I am here today to provide these unzipping solutions for you. In the following list I offer a few of my favorite utilities for this task…most of which are free. So enjoy

1.)        Win zip —   http://www.winzip.com    —   Making the bold claim “World’s most popular Windows Zip utility for file compression, sharing, file encryption, and data backup”, I will just say “hmm?…ok sure.”  I myself have used it, but I wouldn’t say I use it more so than others. It has always worked well for me when I have  used it, but there has always been a drawback for me. I find that a free version is quite hard to find, or else you are faced with a persistent popup dialogue asking you to purchase all the time. So for this reason I have not recently used Winzip.

2.)            7  zip —     http://www.7-zip.org/       —    7-Zip is open source software (Free).  Most of the source code is under the GNU LGPL license. You can use 7-Zip on any computer, including a computer in a commercial organization. You don’t need to register or pay for 7-Zip. I can’t say anything bad about 7 zip…it always works for me and I think its great.

3.)         WobZIPhttp://wobzip.org/      — The last offering  here is quite a wondrous thing, also freeware.  This was the solution to my earlier mentioned dilemma the other day. You see, I had found myself on a computer that I was not allowed to install anything to.  So therefore I turned to the one sure bet I knew of to unzip my file online.  That’s right, I said online file unzipping. WobZIP will allow you to upload a zipped file under 100Mb, and then unzip it for you to easily download from the same page.

I hope you find those useful, and on a similar note I have something else to share.  If you are ever in need of an online file converter…try out these:
